The next heal spell went off.

And the one after that.

And yet another one.

Just the normal Heal Rank II, currently his highest one. Not the most powerful healing spell, but it provided good efficiency between Mana use and amount of damage healed.

Which is why it got spammed all the time by the healers.

Oliver checked his Mana, saw it was only three-quarters gone. Plenty left for this fight.

The most powerful heal at his level, Flash Heal Rank II, would quickly heal a target from 25% to 75%. It was very quick, but came at a great cost, taking over half of his Mana. That made it a last-ditch spell, used only for raids and to keep the tank alive to avoid a total wipe.

Any cleric who used it outside a raid wipe was considered useless.

Once word got around, the cleric might as well just quit the game.

That had nearly happened to Oliver back when the game’s changes first took effect. The warrior named Septmo spread word that Oliver couldn’t handle the fight against Grovar the Glacier, and word spread quick. Thankfully, the forums came to Oliver’s defense when nearly all clerics began complaining that their heals wouldn’t land.

Even now, after the changes, Oliver was still getting used to how heals worked. No longer just a spell that instantly healed the target, he had to work at it.

The Green Dragonkin they’d just fought in the Valley had been equal level to them. It was just him, Dak, and Jeweliette. No tank or melee DPS. They made do, choosing their targets carefully.

The Red Dragonkin were lower level.

There wasn’t much for Oliver to do. Neither Dak nor his pet wolf were taking much damage. Between Dak’s abilities applied to his ranged attacks and Jeweliette’s spells, the mobs were going down quick. They were still careful to not get overwhelmed, which made progress a little slower, but it was a cakewalk.

Oliver wished there was something he could do. He had some offensive abilities—had to for solo leveling. Those times were rare, though. In these fights, he’d occasionally toss out some Holy Beams, but for the most part, he just stood there.

They hadn’t found a tank yet. Sort of didn’t matter, either with low-level Red Dragonkin.

A lot lower level.

He didn’t understand this quest. Green dragons were near the high end for levels; Reds, the lowest. Shouldn’t it have started with the Reds and worked up? Oliver had seen a party of some pretty low-level players in the Valley.

Losing. Badly.

But they had no choice if they wanted to advance.

Black rock lined the cliff walls. Rivers of molten lava flowed in thin streams down the sides, collecting in a large pool at the base of an active volcano. Ash hung in the air, choking all of them. The heat was stifling—worse than that time Oliver and his family went to Disney World in July. Florida. Gak.

There was no shelter, no trees, just mounds of volcanic rock, black and jagged, hot to the touch.

It was miserable.

Oliver yawned, feeling the heat burn down his throat, and casually tossed out a Holy Beam.
